A project to create an outdoor classroom for families in Newhaven has moved a step closer.
Newhaven Town Council decided to give the Bay Vue scheme £10,000 of funding.
The rejuvenation of the green space is being coordinated by Newhaven Community Development Association (NCDA), which said it was working towards making the scheme a reality.
The project will transform an under used space into a vibrant community hub and outdoor classroom, for recreation and learning.
NCDA’s open spaces development worker Jenny Leon said: “This project has been wanted for a really long time in Newhaven.
“It has been suggested by various people in the past, but for numerous reasons it has not happened.
“It’s great that we have now got this funding. It’s brilliant that it is all coming together and that we can make something happen there. It will be an even nicer place for kids growing up in Newhaven.”
Redeveloping the site will help address the lack of green spaces in the town.
Bay Vue is next to the Hillcrest Community Centre, in Hillcrest Road, near two schools, housing for disadvantaged young mums and an older people’s housing scheme.
The town council said many of the houses and multiple occupancy flats in the area had little or no garden.
The scheme will include creating an outdoor classroom and straw bale tearoom with toilets, renovating two bomb shelters under the site, providing a new access for the nursery and Hillcrest users, and delivering healthy activities.
Veolia Environmental Trust has already given NCDA a £30,000 conditional offer to cover the cost of the classroom works, which will include a wildlife area with pond and pond dipping platform, raised beds, a disabled access path and levelling the ground.
The town council money will enable NCDA to pay for a site survey and legal fees. The total cost for the community space part of this project will be £39,500.
Newhaven mayor and NCDA chair Graham Amy said: “However, I am delighted that this project is to go ahead as it will benefit residents of all ages and abilities. Jenny Leon and her team from NCDA are to be applauded for their efforts.”
