Celebrities pose underwater for charity venture

Lewis Hamilton, Keira Knightley, Lily Cole, Natalie Imbruglia and Rebecca Adlington are among dozens of celebrities who have posed for dramatic underwater shots taken by photographer Candice Farmer from Hadlow Down.

Candice won an Oscar as Best Commercial Advertising Photographer.

She now spends all her time, money and expertise promoting Fresh2o Global, a social enterprise she founded to provide clean, safe drinking water to communities in Africa – hence the charity photoshoots. In 2007 she made media headlines after photographing members of Buxted Football Club’s team in the nude for a calendar - sold in support of the same charity.

Candice has enjoyed a career as one of the fashion industry’s most sought after photographers, hence her ability to call in the stars to support her cause. Describing tough filming conditions she said: “They were all incredibly professional. They have to be in their fields of acting, modelling or sport. They are very controlled.

Everyone turned up on time, there were no temperaments on show on at all.”

Some of the photographic sessions were done in the sea, others in a massive tank at Pinewood Studios where Candice donned her scuba gear.

And to continue the high-profile campaign, she’s just been commissioned to take underwater snaps of Bruno Mars, Megan Fox and Zac Efron.

Her underwater photography of some of the most famous faces in the world of celebrity has already established her as one of the most original and versatile image creators in the industry.

So she’s using the medium to draw as much attention as possible to the charity which is dedicated to helping provide water for drinking and sanitation to the 1.1 billion people worldwide who do not have access to it.

Now in her mid 40s, her involvement with the charity was sparked at the age of nine when she stayed with her uncle in Zambia and saw, first hand, the sinister effects of unsanitised water.

In 2007 she decided to leave her well-paid job behind and concentrate her efforts into the development of the Fresh2o social enterprise.

She hasn’t paid herself a salary for three years and any profits she makes from photography are ploughed back into the charity. Its mantra is give people a ‘hand up, not a hand-out’. Candice emphasises 100 per cent of donations go to water projects and so far 115 wells have been dug and about 123,000 lives directly saved.

The charity works with selected NGOs and teams in the field to dig and build wells, harvest rainfall and support village communities who ‘adopt’ their wells. Ahead of World Water Day on March 22, Fresh2o is fighting to extol the environmental benefits of ways to improve the irrigation potential of countries with low water pressure. Candice says that more than 5,000 children a day die from dirty water.
