A group of Polegate singers were on song when they raised hundreds of pounds for charity during a special concert.

Polegate-based South Downs Singers presented a cheque for £900 to charity Abbeyfield South Downs Ltd.

The charity provides sheltered accommodation for older people in Eastbourne, Heathfield, Hove and St Leonard’s-on-Sea.

The funds were raised at a concert at St Andrew’s United Reformed Church, Blackwater Road, Eastbourne, on December 15.

South Downs Singers president Roger Malley presented the cheque to the chairman of Abbeyfield South Downs Ltd, Michael Staff, on Tuesday, January 29.

Mr Staff said: “We are very grateful to the Singers for their support which will help us to continue our work, which is all about alleviating loneliness among older people.

“Fund-raising such as this, donations, and a lot of work from volunteers means we are able to offer accommodation to our residents for around £1,000 a month, considerably less than most commercial organisations.

“The fee gives them their own room, access to shared areas and covers heating, lighting and food. The only extra cost would be a personal telephone.

“Our residents are able to enjoy independence, have support when needed and, most importantly, enjoy the companionship of others – all without the everyday cares of managing their own homes.”

Mr Malley said the Singers were pleased to support Abbeyfield South Downs at concerts held each year.

He said: “The St Andrew’s concert was well-attended and a great success. I am glad the funds are going to such a good cause.”

The choir, currently numbering 50 singers, is open to any member of the community who has a love of music and a desire to sing. At the moment no auditions are held and members are not required to be able to read music.

A wide variety of music is sung in a sociable setting.Solo and group items can be provided for the benefit of local charity organisation events.

The next concert from the South Downs Singers will be April 13 at St Andrew’s URC Church, Eastbourne.

The programme will include the Vivaldi ‘Gloria’ and the Pergolesi ‘Stabat Mater’.
