Cheeky Girls at De La Warr on Tuesday

A pop duo will be guests of honour at an awards presentation on Tuesday (December 1).

The Cheeky Girls are leading the entertainment in recognition of World AIDS Day at the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill from 7.30pm.

The award ceremony is for the winners and runners up of a recent Poetry and Short Story Competition called "What HIV Means to Me", organised by Hastings and Rother Primary Care Trust (PCT).

Adrienne Lawler, TV presenter and personality, Councillor Jeremy Birch, and Amber Rudd, prospective Conservative candidate for Hastings, will be awarding prizes ranging from a 3D web cam to family days out at local attractions.

After the award ceremony The Cheeky Girls will be leading the entertainment.

Competition organiser, Kevin Dillistone, a sexual health specialist with the NHS in East Sussex, said: "World AIDS Day on December 1 is about remembering those affected by HIV and AIDS, as well as raising awareness about this virus and reminding people how to stay safe.

"We wanted this competition to get people really thinking about HIV and AIDS, and to put their thoughts and feelings down on paper in a poem or short story.

"It is fantastic that TV presenter Adrienne Lawler (from ITV's 'Everything Must Go') and the Cheeky Girls agreed to come on board and lend their support."

The charities which will be represented on the evening are the Terrence Higgins Trust, St Michael's Hospice, based in St Leonards and The Quicken Trust, a Hailsham-based organisation which helps AIDS sufferers in Uganda.

All entries will be compiled into a book available to all GP waiting rooms and libraries across East Sussex.
