Chickens did their bit in wartime

ROUSER seems to be obsessed this week with events of World War Two.

But it's nice to know that Sussex chickens did their bit during the terrible conflict.

This wartime poster for pullets is contained in the very sought-after 1940 year book of the Sussex Poultry Club.

Not many people know that Sussex had its own breed - but it did.

Clem Watson, secretary, wrote in his annual 1940 report: "The Sussex Fowl has lost one of its greatest champions, Mr S C Sharpe.

"In fact the Sussex as a breed owes its inception to Mr Sharpe, for the Light was fomed and fashioned by him and was the first colour to be introduced.

"He had more or less retired from the public gaze of late years but had interested himself in the building of houses which would suit the fowl under all conditions.

"It was Mr Sharpe who founded the Sussex Club and left for us an example of work well done."

So what happened to the Sussex Fowl?
