Children in East Sussex find out how many birds visit school
Schoolchildren across East Sussex will be taking part in the biggest survey of birdlife in UK schools at the end of this month.
From January 21–February 1 the Big Schools’ Birdwatch encourages children and their teachers to discover and learn about the birds that share their school environment.
Last year, 20 schools in the county took part in the nationwide survey with a total of 457 East Sussex school children getting involved.
This year schools in Bexhill, Eastbourne, Hove, Lewes, and Wadhurst have already registered to take part, but there is still plenty of time for schools to sign up at www.rspb.org.uk/schoolswatch
One school joining the fun will be Sacred Heart School in Wadhurst. Year five teacher, Antonia Gabriel, said: “We are a small rural school and I believe this is the first time we have been involved with the RSPB bird-watching activities.
“It is something that all children can access and enjoy together no matter what their ability or age and the teachers are keen to improve their own knowledge about the birds that tend to visit our school grounds!”
Another school that has signed up is Wallands CP School in Lewes. Nic Perry, junior speech and language teacher, said: “Our topic this term is Birds and Flight. We are learning how to identify birds, their life cycles, food chains and habitats.
“We are joining a year one class for the RSPB birdwatch.”
