Chinese charity trek in memory of mum
A son is set to tackle a nine-day trek across the Great Wall of China to raise funds in memory of his mum who died from Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
Mark Lamble is hoping to raise at least £20,000 in his mum’s honour. His mum lived in Hailsham before her death last year at the age of 58.
During the second anniversary of her death – in April next year - he will be joined by two friends for the mammoth task to raise funds for Multiple Sclerosis.
He said: “We have decided to undertake the challenge of a lifetime to raise money for and awareness of MS. I want people to understand how vicious this disease can be.
“I want to raise money so that more research can be carried out to try to identify the symptoms and other contributing factors earlier.”
Mr Lamble’s mum was diagnosed with primary progressive MS (PPMS) around seven years ago and she deteriorated rapidly during that period and as the years went by she gradually lost the ability to talk, walk, feed and wash herself and eventually became completely bed bound and unable to communicate properly.
She was admitted to hospital after developing a chest infection in March last year and later came home to die and palliative nurses were arranged to come and care for her. She died in the early hours of Monday, April 16 last year.
Mr Lamble, whose grandfather also died from the disease at the age of 48, said his mum was his ‘inspiration’ for taking part in the trek.
The NHS worker, who said PPMS affects about 10 to 15 per cent of people diagnosed with MS, added: “It is a nine-day adventure to raise money for this worthy charity.
“The date of the walk is also significant as it will be during the anniversary of my mother’s passing over.
“We would like to raise at least £20,000 between the three of us.”
MS is a neurological condition which affects around 100,000 people in the UK.
Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 20-40, but it can affect younger and older people too. Almost twice as many women have MS as men.
Symptoms include fatigue, vision problems and difficulties with walking.
