Shops across Wealden enjoyed bumper sales up to Christmas. Figures were boosted by successful late night shopping events which all enjoyed record crowds.
In Uckfield, Chamber of Commerce secretary Ian Blackaller commended efforts made by traders to ensure the evening went with a swing.
He said: “It was a phenomenal success - probably the best evening we have ever had. “
Mark Arno from Carvills said this events were spread north and south along the High Street: “There was more going on in the town than we’ve ever had before. It’s not simply an evening’s shopping, it’s a community event, buzzy and lively with organisations sharing the limelight.”
In Heathfield, a delighted Chris Macklin, boss of Trading4U, said: “We were running at two per cent up then we hit December 1 and the brakes came off. The month saw us 5.86 per cent up on last year and 14 per cent up in Christmas week. We begin Christmas each year at February trade shows. People like to shop locally as they get customer service and can bring things back or change them without ‘online’ complications.”
