Club helps the world’s needy

Members of a club heard how they had helped to feed needy families this Christmas when they met for the first meeting of the year in the Red Lion in Willingdon.

Eastbourne Soroptimists club, whose members come from the Wealden area, held their first meeting of the year on January 28.

The club heard how their donation of three large bags of dry goods and tins had been much appreciated by the newly formed Hailsham foodbank.

The meeting also discussed the visit by four members to their link club in Nara, Japan for their 40th anniversary, who took part in a conference, social events, meeting the local Mayor and lots of sightseeing.

They took a donation of £259 from Eastbourne to the Nara club’s project helping children who had suffered following the tsunami in 2011.

The Contact the Elderly group had enjoyed a tea party at one of the Soroptimist’s homes in Gun Hill with food and drinks provided by members – eight elderly people had been transported to the event by helpers from the group.

A coffee morning held at the president elect’s home in Bexhill has raised £100 for the club’s education project – helping a girl in Kabubbu, Uganda through the Quicken Trust project.

The Soroptimists Club is part of Soroptimist International. The organisation is a worldwide women’s organisation which campaigns and supports projects, locally, nationally and internationally for women, families and the environment.
