The architectural firm behind Embassy Court in Brighton and Centre Point in the West End has been chosen to renovate iconic Saltdean Lido.

Saltdean Lido Community Interest Company (CIC) has appointed award-winning Conran and Partners as the lead consultant.

Saltdean Lido is the UK’s only Grade II* listed lido and one of only three remaining seaside lidos.

Richard Mason, a director of Saltdean Lido CIC and local architectural consultant, said: “The quality of the proposals we received was extremely high and many firms were understandably keen to get involved with this project.

“Conran’s expertise and passion for modernist architecture shone through and we are delighted to be able to choose a local Brighton-based practice.”

Conran and Partners, Sir Terence Conran’s architecture and design studio, has decades of expertise working with 20th century buildings.

Past projects in Brighton include Embassy Court, a radical 1930s building on the seafront designed by Wells Coates and one of the first modernist buildings to be constructed in Britain.

Argus Lofts is another historic Brighton building that was transformed into loft-style apartments by Conran in 2004.

The mix of private homes and social housing has become a residential landmark in the city.

In London, Conran architects are working on new residential plans for Centre Point, the 1960s modernist skyscraper that towers over the West End.

Saltdean Lido includes an outdoor pool and an iconic modernist building.

Saltdean Lido CIC was granted a 60-year lease of the lido in December from its freeholder, Brighton and Hove Council, to restore, renovate and modernise the pool and its historic modernist building which has been on English Heritage’s ‘At Risk Register’ since October 2011.

Saltdean Lido CIC held a competitive tender inviting a number of companies to submit proposals.

Conran and Partners will now work up the designs in accordance with the CIC’s brief which has been formed from consultations with the local community and building stakeholders.

Paul Zara, who heads up Conran and Partners’ Brighton office, said: “Saltdean Lido is an iconic site of immense cultural value.

“We will work hard using all our experience with modernist and listed buildings to help turn it into a magnificent building for people of all ages to enjoy and love for years to come.”
