County 'ready for the snow'
WITH severe winter weather predicted tonight and tomorrow, West Sussex county council is reassuring residents it is well prepared.
The Met Office is advising the county council on when and where snow is likely to fall. Forecasters are also using data from the network of weather stations, including new ones at East Grinstead and Bury Hill.
During October the county council's winter maintenance team began preparations with Operation Snowflake. This involved testing all equipment and making sure drivers knew the roads as all gritting routes have been reviewed since last winter.
The exercise was held at the county's depots at Broadbridge Heath on the outskirts of Horsham, Clapham near Worthing, and Drayton near Chichester.
The council also has smaller depots at Midhurst and Hickstead from where gritters operate.
Barns at the highways depots are full of road de-icing salt following deliveries.
The winter plan covers all 'A' or principal roads as well as many other roads of local importance such as access roads to hospitals, most schools and colleges, industrial estates, rail and bus stations, ambulance and fire stations.
Henry Smith, Leader of West Sussex County Council said: "The county council currently salts approximately 42 per cent of the road network in West Sussex compared to a national average of 38 per cent.
"It's part of our commitment to keeping West Sussex moving, whatever the weather.
"Our dedicated team are ready to help residents and I know they will do a fantastic job."
Residents are advised to check the county council's website or listen to their local radio station to find out if their children's school is closed.
The West Sussex County Council Contact Centre will be opening from 7am so parents can call 0845 075 1007 for information.
