Passengers in Hailsham, Polegate, Heathfield and Waldron will benefit from a special bus service which will fill a ‘service gap’ on New Year’s Day.

Cuckmere Buses stepped in to offer a New Year’s Day Service on route 50 from Heathfield to Eastbourne via Polegate and Hailsham after volunteers from the bus service were concerned Hailsham would be left without any public transport as the commercial bus companies do not operate on this day.

Working with Hailsham Town Council, Polegate Town Council and other parishes in the Wealden district, the bus operator said it would fill the gap for the third year and will run hourly until its last return journey at 5.10pm from Eastbourne.

Philip Ayers, managing director of Cuckmere Buses said: “Cuckmere Buses has tried hard to provide services for the local communities it serves for 37 years. We cannot replace the commercial companies, but try to complement them. As public purse strings tighten, we expect demand for our services to increase over the coming years.”

The New Year’s Day timetable is at cuckmerebuses.org.uk and wealdenbus.org.uk. If you are over 25 and would like to volunteer as a driver call 01323 870920.
