Demolition of Seaford seafront’s last pub is underway

THE CONSTRUCTION vehicles moved in on the last seafront pub in Seaford this week as developers prepared to build retirement flats.
Residents campaigned to prevent McCarthy and Stone from acquiring planning permission.
Concerns were expressed that losing the pub would be the final nail in the coffin for the seafront.
A spokesperson for McCarthy and Stone said: “Work is underway to remove existing buildings and clear the site ahead of initiating build work.
“Construction of 51 age exclusive assisted living apartments and communal facilities is anticipated to start in late October.
“Apartments will be available to buy off plan in April 2013 with first occupations taking place in the autumn of 2013.”
An online petition was set up in a bid to overturn the decision to demolish the pub, as well as several other buildings in Dane Road.
Several planning applications were put into Lewes District Council and turned down until one was approved by a planning inspector on appeal.
Seaford councillor Sam Adeniji said he thought the proposals would put a strain on care facilities, Jim Skinner from Seaford Community Partnership described it as a “nail in the coffin for Seaford’s future as a vibrant seaside town,” while Seaford Town Council leader Ian White said: “In my opinion this development will do nothing to enhance the seafront scene.”
The plans include a building for ten age-restricted apartments for the frail elderly.
McCarthy & Stone argued more focus needed to be put on creating accommodation that would better address the needs of a rapidly ageing population, thus freeing up family-sized properties.
It also said by providing rented accommodation for older people who could not afford to purchase their own properties without assistance, these apartments would directly address the housing needs of the sections of the community not already catered for.
