Dog survives 50ft cliff fall
A GERMAN Shepherd dog survived a 50ft cliff fall.
The worried owner called emergency services after her dog leapt off the cliff, chasing a rabbit, near Newhaven Fort yesterday (Thursday).
Firefighters raced to the scene at 10am but called the coastguard for help when they realised the two-and-a-half-year-old dog had landed on a small ledge half way down.
Trevor Cutler, coastguard station manager, said: 'It had landed on a small ledge.
'We got up there and called the full coastal cliff rescue team out.
'We put one of our rescue team down.
'It was quite aggressive, quite nervous about our cliff man so he sat on the ledge with it gain its trust, it was a bit of a tense time.
'We managed to calm the dog down, one of our cliff team had his packed lunch so he fed it a lot of chocolate cake to calm it down.'
'We put it in a rescue harness and pulled it up the cliff.
'We would advise people always to have their dogs on leads when walking near cliff edges and if something like this does happen always call us do not attempt to climb down.'
