Duke of Kent arrives in town to see the sights

LEWES had a royal visitor on Tuesday, November 3, as His Royal Highness the Duke of Kent attended the official opening of the refurbished Lewes Castle and Barbican House Museum.

The castle and museum recently underwent a 1.2 million refurbishment funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, and many sources including local businesses and Lewes residents.

John Manley, chief executive of Sussex Archaeological Society, owners of Lewes Castle since 1850, said: 'The Sussex Archaeological Society was greatly honoured to receive such a visit and it marked another historic occasion in the lifetime of a monument that has lasted for almost 1,000 years.

"I think he was impressed with the overall quality of the interpretation in both Barbican House and Lewes Castle, and fully appreciated the new interpretation would encourage greater access to understanding the heritage of Lewes."

The castle has been open to visitors since June, and Mr Manley said new features, including interactive models, have been very popular.

Plumpton College also received a visit from His Royal Highness on the same day.

A tour of the college featured new building developments at the college including a new library and resource centre.

His Royal Highness also viewed a demonstration of forestry techniques and a tour of the college's acclaimed winery.
