Endangered species at Drusillas in Alfriston
TWO red-bellied lemurs have arrived at Drusillas Park in Alfriston.
The pair, Awa and Swali, are members of an endangered species and have been brought to Drusillas from the Cotswold Wildlife Park in Oxfordshire, as part of a European breeding programme
The red bellied lemurs are a new species to Drusillas and will be gradually be introduced to the park's walkthrough Lemurland exhibit.
They come from the rainforests of north-east Madagascar, feed mainly on fruit but also eat flowers, leaves and small animals such as millipedes.
The lemurs have become a threatened species mainly due to habitat destruction, hunting and political unrest.
In the past 24 years their population has dropped by 30 percent.
