Evening to celebrate composers

THE Lewes based Esterhazy Chamber Choir is putting on an evening to celebrate the anniversaries of composers Purcell and Handel.

This year marks 350 years since Purcell's birth and 250 years since Handel's death.

The evening is to take place at 7.30pm on November 21 at St John's sub Castro, Lancaster Street, Lewes.

The choir is led by conductor Sandy Chenery and the evening will include tenor Daniel Auchincloss and The Baroque Collective - an informal grouping of the UK's most talented and experienced period instrument performers and singers. It is also based in Lewes.

Music that will be performed includes Purcell: Hail Bright Cecilia (Ode for St Cecilia's Day 1692), Handel: The Ways of Zion do Mourn (Funeral Anthem for Queen Caroline 1737), Handel: Zadok the Priest, Handel: My Heart Is Inditing.

It is a St Cecilia-tide concert celebrating the music of Purcell and Handel in this joint anniversary year, including Handel's best-loved Coronation Anthem, Zadok the Priest.

Tickets cost 10 (students and unwaged 8, under 16s free) and are available in advance in person from Lewes Tourist Information Centre, High Street, Lewes, or on the door.
