Clerk of the Course Sarah Clowes has lined up a sparkling array of runners and riders for ‘The Franklin Stakes’, the feature race in a Gala Horse Race Evening at Lewes Con Club on March 28.

The giant dice and the wooden horses will all be under starter’s orders at 7.30pm but tic tac men will be on the spot for punters to get the odds from 7pm onwards.

The stewards have promised an exciting night with a race card that will tempt the most timid backers, as every bet will be ‘on the nose’.

Because at this ‘Night at The Races’, everyone will be a winner as all the takings (or at least for the punters all the losings) will go towards Franklin’s Fund, after which the feature race is named.

Franklin’s Fund is a unique local charity that makes sure a little Kenyan boy of that name can go to school in Mombasa.

The whole evening is geared towards helping educate Franklin, who was ‘adopted’ by Lewesian Carol Willé on a visit to Kenya in 2004.

Carol was so impressed with his desire to learn against a background of abject poverty, she made arrangements for him to attend school and eventually university, funded by her family and friends in Britain.

Unfortunately Carol died in 2009, but three friends kept her dying wish alive by carrying on the funding for Franklin to go to school.

The Clerk of the Course, along with race stewards Sarah Day and Darren Bradley organise two events a year such as ‘Race Night’ to keep the money flowing and ensuring it goes directly to Franklin’s education.
