EXCLUSIVE: Firework factory boss arrested for assaulting a police officer

THE owner of a firework factory was arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer at Lewes Bonfire celebrations .

Martin Winter, 50, president of Borough Bonfire Society, is the owner of Festival Fireworks, Shortgate, near Ringmer.

It was the scene of a devastating blaze in which two firefighters were killed in December last year.

Mr Winter was arrested on Monday evening during the Grand Procession through Lewes town centre on suspicion of committing a public order offence and assaulting a PC.

The offences are alleged to have happened at around 8.50pm in Friars Walk near to its junction with School Hill.

Police allege Mr Winter demanded Borough Bonfire Society should be allowed to pass through a police cordon to march up School Hill.

He is alleged to have been aggressive and pushed an officer.

Mr Winter denied the police charges and said he intended to make an official complaint.

He told the Express: 'I didn't do what they said I did, I wouldn't ever do anything like that, especially not at my age.

'I definitely intend to make a complaint.

'It was a wrongful arrest and excessive use of force.

'There were five coppers on me when I was on the ground.'

A video of the incident has been placed on YouTube's website showing Mr Winter's arrest.

After the arrest Mr Winter was held overnight in police cell and questioned the next day (Tuesday).

He was released on police bail pending further investigations and bailed to return on December 21.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the incident.

An independent film crew is believed to have filmed what happened.

Police are keen to speak to them.
