Hailsham Leisure Centre is running an exercise referral programme to help people rebuild their strength as they recover from cancer.

The Leisure Centre said some research has suggested exercise can help with recovery from cancer and the Freedom Leisure team have had training, funded by Macmillan Cancer Care, to ensure they are able to develop tailor-made programmes to suit people’s individual needs.

Working in close partnership with the cancer ward of Eastbourne District General Hospital and local GP surgeries, Freedom Leisure is now looking for people who wish to join their next course.

Stephanie Wadlow, Freedom Leisure GP Referral Coordinator, said: “Many people with cancer are quite weak and anxious initially so we train them very carefully and little by little they rebuild their muscular strength, endurance and confidence which, in turn, helps them fight the disease. We understand it can be hard physically and emotionally to get back to exercise after cancer so our plan is broken down into manageable steps that can be accomplished.”

Sue Bailey, who completed the course, said: “Because we all had cancer there was no awkwardness and we all understood the unique challenges that cancer brings.”

The course starts on January 31, and costs £45 for ten weeks. To find out more call 01323 846755.
