Fight on track to save signal box
The fight to save Polegate’s signal box has stepped up a gear this week.
An application for listing of the box on the High Street has been submitted to English Heritage.
A 474 strong petition backing the fight has also been collected by the Save Our Signal box (SOS) group.
MP Norman Baker, transport minister in the government, wrote a letter in support and television star David Dimbleby has also backed the campaign, according to members of the group.
David Higgins, chief executive of Network Rail, which owns the building, has offered his company’s support, said chairman of the SOS group, town councillor Michael Clewitt.
The committee consists of Cllr Clewitt, vice chairman Town Mayor, Cllr Malcolm Cunningham, who works for Southern Rail and is therefore proving invaluable as an intermediary with the railway company, together with Jayne Bigsby as secretary and Terry Wright as Secretary and Treasurer respectively, both former councillors in the town.
Mr Clewitt, said: “I think this makes a strong core committee and we shall soon call a meeting of all those interested to co-opt other members before we start serious negotiations with Network Rail and commence the big task of fund-raising.”
The campaign was launched after Network Rail posted notices to demolish the building as part of a country-wide scheme to rid itself of almost all signal boxes as they become redundant.
