Fire at historic Wakehurst Place

Firefighters tackled a fire at historic Wakehurst Place.

The fire and rescue workers used thermal imaging and a special kit as they spent more than an hour dealing with the incident at the major tourist attraction.

They were called to the house off Selsfield Road just outside Ardingly at 6.20 pm last night.

The fire in a tall chimney gave the Turners Hill firefighters slightly more of a challenge than the usual chimney fire.

A West Sussex Fire And Rescue Service spokesman described the burning structure as a "difficult" chimney.
