Firefighters battle house blaze

MORE than 40 firefighters worked to tackle a blaze which destroyed the home of a wheelchair-bound man.

Emergency services sped to Back Lane, Rushlake Green, at 7.16pm yesterday (monday).

Edward Faridany, a gardener, energy expert, bookseller, publisher and Harvard graduate, was evacuated by his carer and was taken to a hotel in Eastbourne.

Fire engines from Heathfield, Herstmonceux, Burwash, Mayfield, Battle, Eastbourne, Barcombe and Uckfield attended.

The fire is believed to have been sparked by an electrical fault in the roof but investigations are continuing.

EDF engineers were called and by 8pm five jets were being used to extinguish the flames.

The site was deemed safe just before 10pm.

Mr Faridany, who broke his back in a hunting accident more than 20 years ago, had designed and created a Mediterranean garden which he opened every year to raise money for spinal research.

His late wife, Nana Faridany was the organiser of the Carmel Bach Festival in California.

She died in 2005.
