First choice secondary school places on the up
IT'S the news that many parents will have been waiting anxiously for – whether their child got into their first choice of secondary school or not.
And many will be delighted as figures from West Sussex County Council showed that the number of parents who got their first choice was up on last year from 89.3 per cent to a gratifying 92.2 per cent across the county.
But applications for secondary places were down from last year, with 7227 coming in for a September 2010 start, compared to the 7257 the local authority received for 2009.
It spelled out good news for families as 97.3 per cent of parents saw their child win a place at one of their preferences, an increase from 95.5 per cent last year.
There are no schools in West Sussex that use the 'random allocation' lottery method or fair banding.
A spokesman for the county council said: "The choice of a secondary school is always an important moment for families, and the percentage of parents receiving their first preference and also for those who received one of their preferences have both increased over last year.
"However, there will be some parents who have been disappointed and that has to be acknowledged.
"We would like to wish all children starting at secondary school in September every possible success, and know our schools will be working hard to make them welcome."
