People shopping in Uckfield reported cars floating in rainwater that had washed down the steep High Street.

Southern trains were delayed by up to 50 minutes and the company ran replacement bus services from Brighton to Haywards Heath.

Surface water on the M25 caused heavy delays while the A27 was partially blocked following a crash at the A26 Southerham roundabout near Lewes.

Storms hit hardest in Uckfield, Heathfield and Lewes.

A spokesperson for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: "We have had flooding in Uckfield.

"We have had 20 calls, all from various shops, some of them had to be have pumped out."
