The rivers Ouse and Cuckmere are on flood alert today (Monday January 28) with heavy rain and strong winds expected to hit Lewes and East Sussex this afternoon.

Flood alerts have been issued by the Environment Agency for the River Ouse from Slaugham to Barcombe and the River Cuckmere from Vines Cross to Exceat Bridge.

The Met Office forecast is for rain and strong winds to spread east across the country today with rain becoming persistent and locally heavy by early evening.

Light rain is expected in Lewes by 3pm, becoming heavy by 6pm and continuing into the night.

There is also the risk of gales along the coast.

Rain is due to clear for a time overnight and tomorrow is expected to be windy, especially along the coast with outbreaks of rain, with some heavy bursts.
