Former breast cancer patient signs up for Cycletta at Plumpton Racecourse to raise
Melanie Hurley
A BRAVE local resident who suffered from breast cancer will ride 40km in Cycletta Brighton at Plumpton Racecourse on Sunday September 30 to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Melanie Hurley first became aware of the invaluable support provided by Macmillan when she was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year.
Macmillan is the lead charity partner of Cycletta, a series of women’s only cycling events taking place around the UK.
Race organisers were highlighting Melanie’s decision to take part in a bid to encourage other women to sign up, as entries are still open for the event - visit www.cycletta.co.uk to find out more.
Melanie said: “When I was told by the consultant that I had breast cancer it was a huge shock as I genuinely believed that there was nothing wrong.
“It was when the Macmillan nurse whisked me away that it sunk in that I indeed had something very wrong. The Macmillan nurses were so kind, caring and supportive, never rushing you.”
Following her diagnosis, Melanie went through several months of treatment, and had both surgery and radiotherapy.
Her treatment finished on the June 6 and just 25 days later she completed her first road cycle event on a bike she had bought on Ebay.
She had never cycled on a road before, but enjoyed it so much that she was inspired to sign up for Cycletta Brighton, to raise vital funds for Macmillan.
“The nurses in the East Surrey Hospital were just fantastic. They always had time for me whenever I called up, always remembering who I was and they would fit me straight into the clinic to help relieve the pain I was in.
“I am riding in Cycletta Brighton to say thank you to them and to raise money for such a good cause. If I can raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support so soon after going through breast cancer than others can too! “
Cycletta, is the UK’s leading series of women-only bike rides.
The series is supported by Olympic Gold Medallist Victoria Pendleton (MBE) and is aimed at all levels of cyclists and takes place over achievable distances.
All participants are encouraged to fundraise for Macmillan Cancer Support to help improve the lives of people affected by cancer.
