Free parking in Lewes, Eastbourne and Hastings on Thursdays in run up to Christmas
East Sussex County Council and its parking operators NSL are providing free parking for late night shopping every Thursday night running up to Christmas.
It will be free to park on-street in Eastbourne, Lewes and Hastings from 4pm today (Thursday 6), 13, and 20 December until the next morning.
The council is hoping it will make Christmas shopping easier and encourage trade in the towns.
Lead member for transport and environment cllr Carl Maynard said: “In the spirit of the season, we have agreed that we will not charge for parking on the Thursday nights running up to Christmas.
“We have offered this after speaking with local traders and hopefully it will make Christmas shopping a little bit easier for people.
“Unfortunately, it is not practical for us to cover every single parking meter at 4pm and uncover it in the morning, but we will be putting stickers on every meter to let people know when the don’t have to pay.
“Please make sure that you do not pay for a ticket when you don’t have to.
“As with previous years, we will also not be charging for parking on 25 December, 26 December and 1 January so that people will be able to relax and enjoy the festive period without having to worry about receiving a parking ticket. And visitors to our area who are staying at hotels or with friends and family will be able to enjoy a lie-in without having to rush out and move the car.”
Lead member for property, regeneration and enterprise at Lewes District Council, cllr Rob Blackman, said: “It’s great news that we have introduced free parking in three major towns this Christmas.”
Penalty notices will still be issued if there is illegal parking such as parking in a disabled bay without a blue badge or on double yellow lines.
