Friday night is film night in Mayfield
FILM ON FRIDAY, Mayfield’s popular and well-subscribed cinema club, begins its autumn season of nine films on Friday, September 7 at 8.30pm in the Memorial Hall. Doors and a licensed bar open at 8pm.
First is Italian movie Salt of Life. This is described as a delightful comedy by screenwriter/director/actor Gianni Di Gregorio (described as a cross between his countryman Fellini and Woody Allen) and is a continuation of Mid-August Lunch shown in Mayfield two seasons ago.
A gloomy househusband in late middle age is dominated by his mother, disenchanted by his marriage and obsessed with the last chance of romantic adventure. Di Gregorio, no matinee idol, is the hangdog, melancholy hero.
Poignantly unattactive his face lights up with a nervous, heartbreakingly eager grin whenever any of his putative conquests favour him with a smile.
Gianni’s nonagenarian mother, gloriously reprised by Valeria De Franciscis, telephone him at all hours demanding attention.
Is Salt of Life an indulgant commentary on the Italian male in general and the toxic absurdity of Silvio Berlusconi in particular or about the terrible, onward march of old age and the delusions that go with it?
Goodbye First Love will be screened on October 12. Fifteen year old Camille is infatuated with conceited college student Sullivan. He does not share the intensity of her commitment, having explained his plans to drop out of university and go on a backpacking tour of South America with a couple of friends. Sullivan envisages this trip involving many new kinds of expereince and chastity isn’t one of them.
Young Adult on November 9 is a sharp, funny black comedy about those people for whom life is just high school with money.
Other screeenings are Las Acacias (December 7;) Monsieur Lazhar (January 11;) The British Guide of Showing Off (February 8;) The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (March 9) with April and May films still to be announced.
