Friends shocked by girl's death

FLOWERS and tributes have been left on the cliff top at Seaford Head in memory of a 'warm and friendly' schoolgirl who died there last week.

The body of Roxanne Bruce, 16, of Steyne Road, Seaford, was discovered by a walker at the foot of cliffs at Birling Gap on Monday last week (April 12).

Police say she appears to have fallen from Seaford Head, but they are not treating the death as suspicious.

Chief inspector Bob Gough said: 'From the enquiries we made, it seems Roxanne was a very popular girl who did well at school.

'This is obviously an enormous tragedy, particularly considering how young she was, and our thoughts are with her family and friends at this very difficult time.'

Roxanne attended Seaford Head Community College. Acting headteacher Elizabeth King said the school was 'deeply saddened' by the death of a 'mature and personable young woman'.

'She was warm, friendly, sensitive and capable,' added Mrs King. 'She was interested and involved in her studies with an inquiring mind and imaginative flair.

'She was involved in so many aspects of college life and will be remembered especially for her smile. The whole college is rocked by the tragic loss of one of our members.'

Roxanne's body was recovered from the beach at Birling Gap by Newhaven coastguards. An inquest has been opened and adjourned.
