FULL STORY: Plans to enclose Chailey Common

PLANS to enclose Chailey Common with fencing have been criticised by local people, with warnings that lives - both human and animal - could be put at risk. Read the story by clicking here.

A public inquiry is to be held into whether the nature reserve should be fenced to allow grazing by cattle, sheep and ponies.

John Greenfield described it as an "ill considered measure" and said the scheme posed a danger to walkers from stampeding cattle.

Mr Greenfield, of Haywards Heath Road, North Chailey, said Health and Safety Executive figures showed four people in the UK had been trampled to death by cows already this year.

He asked: "Yet, somehow, this proposal is supposed to be safe at Chailey?

"The A272 cuts through the area where the commons are and is frequently used by ambulances rushing to and from the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath. Surely their sirens will spook the animals at times and there is potential for a bad accident."

Mr Greenfield added: "I think it is entirely unproven that grazing will do much to clear the area. What is required is proper mowing and it seems East Sussex County Council is just not prepared to pay for it."

Due to the number of representations both for and against, the Planning Inspectorate has decided to hold a public inquiry in January next year.
