The high level of child obesity and social exclusion for older residents who have lost partners in Peacehaven has prompted an innovative solution.

Town councils in Peacehaven and Telscombe, the NHS and Wave Leisure, are providing an opportunity to do more exercise and meet new people.

A working party made up of Telscombe and Peacehaven Town Council staff and councillors, NHS staff and representatives of Wave Leisure teamed up to secure a grant of more than £1,700 to improve health and well being.

This will be achieved by working with the GP surgeries to encourage the use of the new outdoor gym in Peacehaven and the other community buildings in the two towns, as well as developing urban walks.

Leisure and amenities committee chair at Peacehaven Town Council, cllr Alan Sargent, said: “The group was successful in the bid and I was very pleased that the activity will be targeting the older residents while also encouraging other groups to do the same.

“The local secondary school students are involved with the making of a promotional video which will be shown in GP surgeries and online, and the local doctors will encourage the use of the outdoor gym where for six weeks there will be a fully trained instructor to help with inductions and training routines.”

A group will be organised to use the gym and have refreshments at Community House to make the most of the coffee mornings held there and use community facilities at Telscombe Town Council offices. It is hoped that after the six weeks the group will continue. Call Steve Keogh at the Town Council on 01273 585493
