GALLERY: NPS Donkey Derby

THEY'RE not likely to ever find themselves in the winner's enclosure at Ascot but the fine beasties of the Seaford Donkey Derby are worth their weight in gold.

A total of 12 elegant equus asinus took part in the much-loved event at the Martello Fields on Bank Holiday Monday.

The dashing donkeys are specially trained by an organisation in Guildford and compete in charity races all over the South East.

The jockeys were also of the highest calibre and from riding schools across the district.

Newhaven Peacehaven and Seaford Lions organised the event and were supported by a host of local charities and community organisations who provided stalls and attractions.

Derek MacGarvie, from the Lions, told the Express: 'We had lots of riders, which was good news because we had been worried we wouldn't get enough but in the end we had plenty.

'It was cold but stayed dry and the tea and cake tent was the most popular attraction!'

Together with the Peacehaven donkey derby in July, the two events raised around 11,000 for local charities.
