Glyndebourne singer dies in car collision

One of the victims of Tuesday night’s double road fatality at Cross in Hand has been named locally as Glyndebourne singer Robert Poulton.

Mr Poulton was due to be singing the role of Gamekeeper in Rusalka as part of Glyndebourne’s 2012 Tour at Norwich Theatre Royal yesterday (Wednesday) evening.

As a mark of respect the performance was cancelled.

A statement on the Glyndebourne website says: “Robert has been a very valued part of the Glyndebourne family for many years. He started his professional career in the Glyndebourne Chorus and as part of this distinguished career has performed central roles both in the Festival and Tour. He will be enormously missed by everyone in the company.”

A Heathfield teenage woman also died in the accident and the road was closed throughout the night for police to carry out forensic work.
