Graphic picture of Wealden population

A GRAPHIC picture of Wealden's ageing population has been revealed in a major survey carried out by the council to determine future housing needs.

The survey was sent to all households in rural parishes and 1,000 households in Heathfield, Uckfield, Crowborough, Polegate and Hailsham.

A total of 8,005 responses were received from the 34,721 sent out, representing a 23 percent response rate.

Replies revealed that almost a third of Wealden households are made up of pensioners, only a quarter have children, the average age of household heads is 57 and just under ten percent are headed by someone under 35.

Owner occupation remains high at 82.8 percent but the private rented sector has increased to just under ten percent from the 2001 census at 6.6 percent. About a quarter of households are families compared with 33.7 percent pensioner households, 11.1 percent single person households and 30.8 percent couples.
