GUNMAN TARGETS GULL

A sniper with an air rifle shot a seagull in Polegate. Hailsham police received a call early on Saturday evening saying someone in Grosvenor Crescent had shot a gull that was nesting nearby.

According to the caller three airgun pellets had been used to kill the gull.

RSPB spokesman Graham Madge said all wild birds, eggs and nests were protected by law. But there were certain circumstances when the authorities could be called in to control birds if their activities caused a health or safety hazard, for example, nesting in outlet flues.

But he pointed out attacks by young people on wild birds were increasing in number, particularly against birds that nested near towns, such as swans, geese, gulls and ducks.

'This attack was almost certain illegal,' he added.
