'Hammer Killer' investigation takes in Hastings crimes

EVIL "hammer killer" Levi Bellfield may have struck in Hastings.

The Metropolitan Police have revealed they will be looking at unsolved attacks on women in the town which took place in 2004.

Wheelclamper and ex-bouncer Bellfield, 39, was given three life terms this week for the murders of students Marsha McDonnell, 19, and Amelie Delagrange, 22.

He was also convicted of the attempted murder of student Kate Sheedy, 18.

The horrific and random crimes took place in 2003 and 2004 in the London area.

But Bellfield - tagged as a hammer killer by the national press - is suspected of having made many more attacks, including the 2002 Milly Dowler murder in Surrey.

DCI Colin Sutton, who led the murder inquiry which resulted in Bellfield's capture, confirmed on Wednesday that a specialist team would now be looking at more than 20 other cases, including some unsolved attacks in Hastings.

He fears they "may have only scratched the surface" with regard to the monster's crimes.

Hastings Police issued a public warning following a spate of motiveless attacks on women between January and March of 2004.

Ronald Puxty, 18, was convicted later that year of three of the attacks and was jailed for life with the recommendation he serve at least four and a half years.

However, some of the offences remained unsolved - including two which took place in the town on January 11.

At 7.10pm a 23-year-old was approached from behind in Laton Road and beaten over the head three times with an unknown weapon.

Then at 10.10pm in The Woodlands, a 16-year-old girl was hit on the head twice.

Both victims described their attacker wearing a balaclava.

Bellfield, who the court heard had a hatred of slim young blondes, was working in Chichester around the time and it is believed these are the offences the Met will be investigating.
