Hastings Rock to return to the airwaves

Bands from across 1066 Country will once again be given their own special showcase as local radio show Hastings Rock returns to the airwaves.

The community radio station was conspicuous by its absence last year after funding problems forced the organisers to pull the plug.

But it will be back broadcasting throughout May, thanks largely to a sponsorship deal with local firm Booker and Best.

Hastings Rock head Andy Gunton confirmed to the Observer that the show would return.

He said: "We know this decision has been a long time coming. But, various different things have needed to be sorted out behind the scenes.

"The main thing to say is that we will be on the air from Saturday, May 1, until midnight on Friday, May 28.

"We are very pleased to be associated with Booker and Best. They are very kindly sponsoring the whole broadcast and without their help and support, we might not have been back this year."

The team of discjockeys will be broadcasting, as usual, from the Robert De Mortain pub on The Ridge but with one important difference – the frequency.

"No more 107FM," said Mr Gunton. "Although we not certain it is most likely we will be broadcasting on 87.7FM – right at the other end of the dial.

"So, prime those radio tuners now and spread the word.

"This frequency change has been forced upon us but we are very hopeful that this change will actually help with the signal reception in the Hastings area."

So everything behind the scenes is in place, now all Hastings Rock needs is the music. And this is where Observer readers can help.

The station will be featuring local bands throughout its broadcast – both on the main playlist and the dedicated local music show.

And any band or artist who wants their tunes featured can do so by sending tracks to the organisers.

It needs to be a CD or an MP3 and should be of broadcastable quality, with no swearing. Bands must offer up original work and hail from 1066 Country, Eastbourne or Rye.

This year's broadcast will be in aid of St Michael's Hospice.
