Heathfield man who worked with Kirk Douglas and upset Idi Amin gives talk

A CHANCE to hear about a life ‘lived to the full’ has been promised by a media professional and authority figure who stood up to Ugandan dictator Idi Amin.

Roger Thomas, a county councillor, has invited folk to join him for a fascinating evening hosted by Hailsham Historical Society, charting his colourful career.

He has worked in business, the media and education in exotic locations ranging from East Africa to the Far East.

Mr Thomas has worked with Hollywood legends Kirk Douglas and William Holden, a host of comedians from Billy Connolly to Peter Sellers and all of the Goons, Joan Collins to Sir Cliff Richard.

He presented Uganda Television’s coverage of the Munich Olympic Games in 1972, and felt the wrath of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin after he refused to support Arab terrorists who massacred the Israeli athletes at the games. He was thrown into prison and banned from broadcasting. Mr Thomas was released after friends helped him to escape.

He joined the BBC in Britain and was commended for presenting a phone-in programme from Birmingham on the night of the IRA bombings in 1974.

Mr Thomas lives in Heathfield with his wife Jenny. He is chairman of the Sussex Inshore Fisheries Authority and the Coastal Issues Interest Group, and vice chairman of East Sussex Association for Blind and partially sighted people.

Join him at 7.30pm in Hailsham Methodist Church Hall this Wednesday, January 11. No charge for society members, £2 on the door for the general public.
