Herstmonceux burglaries could be linked: Sussex Police forensic teams scour both sites

Officers believe that a caravan and a house recently burgled in Herstmonceux, Wealden, may be linked due to the items stolen and the modus operandi.

The caravan that was situated at the rear of a garden in Victoria Road, was broken into sometime between 5.15pm and 7.05pm on Tuesday the 30 October. The caravan was unoccupied at the time and entry was gained by forcing the lock on the main door. Jewellery was stolen.

Then the following day (31 October) the local postman reported to police at around 9.20am that an unoccupied house in Church Road, looked like it had been broken into. When police arrived they found that the front door had been forced and jewellery and other items stolen whilst the occupants were out.

Detective Constable Richard Taylor from East Sussex CID said: “We believe these burglaries may be linked as the properties are near to each other, were unoccupied at the time and jewellery was stolen in both incidents.

“House to house enquiries along with forensics will be continuing and I would appeal to any neighbours who saw or heard any suspicious activity to please call 101 quoting serial 1416 of 30/10. Alternatively you can leave a message anonymously with the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
