Home of William the Conqueror’s mother to view

A HISTORIC building once owned by William the Conqueror’s mother is to be opened for the public to view during these next few days, September 7 to 11.

The Landmark Trust, a building preservation charity, is opening Wilmington Priory, which dates back to the 13th century, as part of the nationwide Heritage Open Days weekend.

Wilmington Priory was founded by Herluin de Conteville and his wife Arlette, the mother of William the Conqueror, which lent it considerable prestige. It was never a conventional priory with cloister and chapter.

The monks prayed in the nearby parish church where the thousand-year old yews bear testimony to the age of the ancient site.

Some of the structure has been added to and altered during its long history - some of it lost to ruin and decay.

What remains now, following restoration, show how important a building it used to be.

There are ruined walls, an underground crypt and an ancient roof structure open to the trusses. Restoration of the building was completed in 2000 and Wilmington Priory has been open as a landmark since then.

Everyone is welcome to attend one of the open days and look around thebeautiful historic building and landscape. There is no need to book.

A free information leaflet will be available which explains the building’s history and restoration. For directions contact the Landmark Trust on 01628 825925 or visit: www.landmarktrust.org.uk. The booking office to visit the priory building opens from 9am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, and 10am to 4pm, Saturday.
