Horsham Junior Baseball Club rides out for cash

With baseball season on the horizon, brave members from the Horsham Junior Baseball Club (HJBC) took part in a sponsored bike ride on March 7 to raise money for the clubs new dug outs.

Despite the cold weather, 11 members of HJBC wrapped up in several layers and took on the 20 mile bike ride from Christ Hospital to Partridge Green and back again.

Including the stops at the team's check points of Bax Castle, Southwater, Copsale and West Grinstead, the ride was completed in just under four and a half hours – no mean feat considering some of the riders were just seven years old.

The final goal for the HJBC members is to raise enough money to buy four professional dug outs for the club's home ground at Ingfield Manor School in Five Oaks.

Founder of HJBC, Robert Burnie said: "Having dug outs at our home ground would be incredible and will make our players feel all the more professional.

"A dug out to those unaware of sporting terminology is basically a covered seating area for the players and coaches to use to keep them safe when they are waiting to play.

"We are now the fifth largest baseball club in Europe, therefore this year we are hoping to get our grounds in tip top shape to really impress our competition.

"Each dug out will cost over 1,000 so we are trying to hold as many fundraising events as possible.

"The club members that took part in the sponsored bike ride raised a fantastic 150 to put towards our goal but we still need the help from the local community."

If you would like to sponsor HJBC to assist with their dug outs or find out more about becoming a volunteer coach or a player for the team please contact the clubs fundraising manager, Debbie Cannons on 01403 741 150 or visit www.horshambaseball.co.uk
