A tutor from Sussex Downs College is in line to be named as the Most Innovative Teacher of the Year.

English lecturer Mark Chutter went head-to-head with entrants from across the UK to be shortlisted for the TEX FE Awards.

The talented teacher will find out if he has won on February 28 at a glittering awards ceremony to be held at The Park Plaza in London.

It promises to be a spectacular event with more than 500 guests expected to attend, including government ministers and prominent figures from the education sector.

The TES FE Awards recognise the dedication and expertise of those who make a significant contribution to improving the skill levels of young people and adult learners on a daily basis. There are 13 categories for 2014, from which judges will select the most outstanding individuals and teams from the learning and skills sector.

Mr Chutter said: “I am delighted to have been nominated for this award. I am passionate about teaching English, which I have been doing since 1997.

“As the course coordinator for AS and A level English Literature at the Lewes campus of Sussex Downs College from 2009-2013, the results improved significantly under my leadership year-on-year. During this time I worked extensively with my talented colleagues to improve the teaching, learning and results and my lessons have in the past been judged ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted. This summer, there were 27 A* grades for A Level English Literature.”

He added: “The students are at the centre of the learning process and I love being creative and innovative in the classroom to inspire them to become independent learners.

“I am really excited about this award and I would like to thank the hard work and dedication of the English Literature team at the Lewes campus, my partner Nigel Lloyd Jones, my manager John Webber for believing in me and the unfailing love and inspiration from my mother Christine.”

Melanie Hunt, Principal at Sussex Downs College, said: “Mark is an inspirational teacher who strives for excellence in enabling his students to achieve and progress.

“We are delighted he has been shortlisted for this award, which recognises his imagination and passion for delivering the very best English classes to learners at Sussex Downs College, and transforming their and future opportunities.”
