Inspiring centre built from volunteer enterprise
Creative energies mingled on Robertson Street after a new centre offering a host of crafts and activities opened its doors to the town.
Toddlers and adults alike explored the three floors of Inspire Artworks, brain-child of New-York raised Aaron Hosannah, getting their hands dirty with clay, spray paint, T-shirt designs and old fashioned pen and pencils.
For Aaron, of Church Road, St Leonards, and the 15 or so volunteers involved in this social enterprise, Saturday's opening crowned two years hard work.
Aaron said: "Everything in here was built by us. There was hardly any money but we built it with commitment and dedication.
"Everybody has given their time and energy - there has been such enterprise."
Workshops offering illustration, murals, clothing design, oil painting and 3d model making are run by a collection of artists brought together by their shared desire to inspire young people and adults.
Centre manager Aaron gained experience working for Xtrax Young People's Centre in nearby Havelock Road before deciding to start Inspire, based around creative principles rather than those of a straightforward drop-in centre.
"The idea is based on bringing creative people together," Aaron, a spray-can specialist, explained. "They learn about their strengths and weaknesses – that's fundamental.
"This is about inspiring and invigorating people by giving them the chance to express themselves creatively."
Anyone able to donate art equipment, particularly materials for a dark room, can contact Inspire and Aaron on 07528413037 or visit the store.
