Introduction of 20mph speed limit near Seaford schools is welcomed
Sutton Avenue and Steyne Road, New 20 mph zone wanted
A proposal from East Sussex County Council to introduce 20mph limits near Seaford schools has been welcomed this week.
If any resulting objections from residents are overcome, the new speed limit could be in force by September 2013.
The county council is planning to create a 20mph zone along Sutton Avenue and Steyne Road, as well as along a number of the side roads in Seaford.
Seaford councillor Carolyn Lambert said: “I am delighted that the county council is finally taking steps to implement a 20mph zone in Sutton Avenue and Steyne Road.
“This has come about after some determined campaigning by local parents and residents which I fully support.
“The Liberal Democrat members of East Sussex County Council continue to campaign for 20mph limits to be imposed outside all our schools to protect children and to ensure that their journey to school is a safe one.”
The county council said it was undertaking a consultation with police, Seaford Town Council, local schools and other statutory consultees, about the proposals, which was due to finish at the end of February.
In March 2013 the council will consult with the properties most affected by the scheme, including those near the proposed vehicle activated sign.
In mid May 2013 it will write to residents to say it will advertise the Traffic Regulation Orders associated with the proposed 20mph zone in June 2013.
If the council receives no objections to the traffic regulation orders, or is able to resolve those it does receive, the scheme will be introduced before the start of the autumn term in September 2013.
However if it receives objections it cannot resolve and needs to make a report to the planning committee, this could delay the scheme by three months.
A spokesperson for Seaford Head School said: “The governors fully support this initiative as it endeavours to increase the safety of the local community including the Seaford Head students as they walk to and from school.”
Last year parent Margery Diamand gained support from hundreds of people, who signed a petition calling for the speed limit to be reduced in roads around Annecy Primary School, which Margery’s sons attend.
She asked the council to introduce the changes in Sutton Avenue, Arundel Road, Steyne Road and the Southdown Road area where Seaford Head School, Annecy Primary School and Micklefield Nursery are based. She has been supported by Seaford resident cllr Lambert.
