Jobs cuts at East Sussex County Council
County Hall Lewes
East Sussex County Council said it will need to cut between 80 and 100 jobs this financial year as part of its cost cutting measures to save £60m during the next three years.
It will aim to use redeployment and voluntary redundancy to keep compulsory redundancies to a minimum.
In addition the council voted to freeze council tax this year (2013-14) for the third year in a row, while approving capital funding for economic development, roads, schools and broadband in East Sussex.
County council deputy leader Keith Glazier, said: “We are in the same boat as every council in the UK in terms of having to make some very tough choices on our revenue budget.
“Our plans to save £60m over the next three years will mean changes and reductions in some services and more job losses.
“We are clear though that we’ll do our very best to mitigate any cuts and protect our key frontline services.
“We are determined to protect the most vulnerable in our county.”
The council agreed its budget for 2013/14 and said it was sticking to its plans to boost economic prosperity, keep a lid on council tax and make £60m worth of revenue savings over the next three years.
Cllr Glazier said: ““Our budget has been approved and we promise to continue to boost the East Sussex economy - with better road links, such as the Bexhill Hastings Link Road, and better broadband through our go-esussex initiative.
“I’m also delighted that we’ve frozen council tax for the third year in a row.
“It is so important that we help people as they try to manage their household budgets where every pound counts.”
During the three years the county council plans to cut adult social care by £27.8m, economy transport and environment by £13m and children’s services by £11m and corporate, community services and other by £8.4m.
