A Lewes florist has branched out with an exciting new venture aimed at giving the area a new lease of life.

Visitors can now find traditional refreshment as well as their favourite blooms at Lewesiana, 85 High Street.

The Lewes Tea Room was launched at the premises last week, where a cuppa can be enjoyed with cakes and sandwiches.

Proprietor Christian Hopper said: “it’s part of our efforts to revive the ‘top end of town’ and capitalise on our location near Lewes Castle.”

The independent artisan florist already offers gifts and beauty products.

Meanwhile, Richard Bates – a builder for more than 30 years – decided that the time was right for a change. With his wife, Julie, who until this year was a teacher’s assistant, he has taken over the Station Street Snacks in Lewes.

After a complete refurbishment, where Richard’s building skills have been invaluable, they have opened for business. He has now swapped the smell of bricks and dust for that of sizzling bacon and fresh coffee.

Richard said: “The physical work as a builder has been demanding over the years and Julie and I wanted to do something together. A small café seemed ideal.”

Their first task was to decide on the level of catering. They now provide snack meals, such as all-day breakfasts, home-made soups, jacket potatoes, baguettes and sandwiches with a wide variety of fillings.

They also offer home-made cakes and scones as well as a wide variety of hot and cold drinks. They are helped by their daughters, Emma and Lucy, so Station Street Snacks is truly a family concern.

Elsewhere, it is understood that the vacant former Happy Feet shoe boutique premises on School Hill, Lewes, which closed last year, is to become a baker’s.
