Lewes, which already enjoys a reputation for its delightful and quirky arts scene, has scored a remarkable coup with a visit this summer by a world-renowned band.

Mumford and Sons will be performing at the Convent Field on the weekend of July 19 and 20 as part of their Gentlemen of the Road Tour.

They are the first band to achieve as many as six concurrent titles in the US chart since The Beatles 48 years ago and have been nominated for six Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year for Babel.

Mumford and Sons have spent months visiting small cities and towns around the UK, searching for places with the unique character and communities with the spirit needed to make things happen.

Manager Adam Tudhope said: “The band and I met with Jenny Rowlands, Chief Executive of Lewes District Council, her regeneration team and the Police a couple of months ago when we were deciding where to take the 2013 UK Stopover.

“We were so impressed by the speed that the Lewes team could make things happen as well as being incredibly helpful and supportive that we decided our only UK Stopover would be in Lewes this year.

“Some of us had been to Bonfire Night in Lewes and knew what a great place it is, so we’re absolutely delighted to be staging our event there and we can’t wait to join with the community to make it amazing.”

James Page, Leader of the Council, said: “I would like to thank the officer team who have helped to bring this about so far. This has been a joint effort across a number of departments and partners and is a great example of our ability to work quickly and cohesively in short timeframes.

“This tour presents a fantastic opportunity for local businesses to benefit from the visitors attracted and I hope they will take every opportunity to get involved. We will continue to work with Mumford and Sons to deliver a big, fun and safe event, something Lewes is renowned for.”
