Lewes’ very own ‘Karate Kid’ is world champion

SHE has won eight individual gold medals, two gold trophies, one silver trophy and one bronze medal and trophy.
Most importantly, Lewes girl Elouise Waterman is a world champion.
Most surprisingly, she is only nine years old.
The pint-sized warrior has rapidly made a name for herself in the gruelling martial art world of Tae Kwon-do.
Her remarkable achievements were rewarded at Lewes Town Council’s 2011 Youth Sports Awards when she was presented with a special certificate and a cheque.
Elouise attends the Ken James Tae Kwon-do Academy in Lewes and in the space of just two years has become world champion for her height and belt level.
Currently a blue belt and working towards the next belt category, her skills are regularly put to the test in local and national competitions where she has proved almost unstoppable.
The Olympics year got off to a flying start at Lewes Corn Exchange when 33 young spotsmen and women received their awards from the Mayor of Lewes, Cllr John Stockdale, with Mayoress, Becca Stockdale.
He said: “Sport is a Cinderella activity for young people today. There are so many other very worthwhile calls on your time that exercise for your generation has regrettably had to take a back seat.
“That’s why it is so encouraging to see so many of you here tonight. So ‘congratulations for taking part’ – and, even more so, ‘congratulations on being the winners that you are’.”
The awards are now in their second year and winners were as follows: Junior Boy (Under-12), won jointly by Roddy McGillivray and Luke Stewart of St Michael’s (Lewes) Table Tennis Club. Both were selected for the England Table Tennis Association South East Regional Squad.
Senior Boy (12-18 years), won jointly by Robbie Winters and Kai Mason, both members of the St Michael’s (Lewes) Table Tennis Club’s A team in the Eastbourne and District League.
Junior Girl (Under-12), Elouise Waterman – her remarkable Tae Kwon-Do achievements were the result of hard work and dedication as a martial artist said her instructor Ken James in his nomination notes.
Junior Team (Under-12), awarded jointly to Lewes Netball Club’s Under-12 teams – Ellie Keeping, Eliza Pullen, Ollie Powell, Lucia Mills, Larissa Carter, Eleanor Kaye, Ella Mansell; Freya Bellack, Kate Uphus-Wheatley, Lorna Boothroys, Charlotte Baker, Molly Osborne, Grace Peters; Millie Brooks, Chloe Turner, Eloise Kenthill, Simia Grant, Aileen Davies-Arai, Xanthe Fairhead, Madeleine Walder.
Senior Team (12-18 Years), Lewes Junior Badminton Club’s Year 11 team – Peter Shearing, Will Brownhill, Matt Mundroina, Conrad Collins, Tomas Bernejo, Sam Wray, Robbie Eyles and Robin Jeanneret.
