Lib Dems win Polegate Town Council by-election

THE Liberal Democrats have retained a seat on Polegate Town Council and gained a further seat, following a by-election.

The election on Thursday last week (September 13) was triggered following the deaths of former Mayors Roy Martin and Gerald Carter earlier this year.

Don Broadbent was elected with 551 votes to top the poll followed by Hugh Parker with 435 votes.

The result means the Lib Dems now have three seats on the town council which is dominated by Polegate Residents Association.

Cllr Broadbent said: “This win has confirmed the local people’s faith in not only our policies but our local approach that was demonstrated in the recent Wealden District Council election result.

“I am very pleased to be elected to Polegate Town Council and very grateful to all our hard working supporters and to the voters of North Ward.”

Hugh Parker was also very pleased with the result which saw him elected.

Cllr Parker said: “It is an honour to be elected to serve the people of Polegate for the first time.

“I trust this will bring a little more balance to the council and help us turn around the poor condition that Polegate has been left in by the district council.”

“These results are a positive turning point in the fortunes of Polegate Liberal Democrats.

“Residents care strongly about local issues because and they now have an extra vote at council meetings.”

Results for the other candidates at the by-election were: Spencer Kenward (394); Mark Kelner (374).

The Conservative Party came last with Merle Phillips (223) and Simon Popek (194).
